The Evolution of the Governance Professional
Governance Support has traditionally been seen as administrative: scheduling meetings, taking minutes, circulating papers. That perception is gradually shifting. Increasingly, Governance Professionals are expected to go beyond knowledge of statutory frameworks and apply that understanding strategically — advising boards on effectiveness, supporting assurance and accountability, interpreting what compliance actually means in practice, and acting as a valuable link between governance and executive leadership.
For Multi Academy Trusts in particular, this has pushed the role closer to that of a Company Secretary‚ someone who protects the integrity of governance processes and helps the board demonstrate strong oversight to regulators, auditors and Ofsted.
